Elevation Jiu Jitsu

The effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been proven by decades of "Vale Tudo" competitions. These "anything goes" matches often had no rules or time limits and were incredibly popular in Brazil in the twentieth century. Hélio and his brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastao and Jorge, made a name for themselves by giving several demos and winning street fights.
After only 1 year of lessons from Mitsuyo Maeda (judo expert) who went back to Japan, Hélio (the youngest brother) developed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, also called Gracie Jiu Jitsu, as a very effective fighting technique with a sporting aspect. More about Hélio and its history can be found here.
The first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school opened its doors in 1925 and challenged schools with other fighting styles to test their techniques. Hélio Gracie defeated all his opponents, even those who weighed 2x heavier, in all kinds of styles with and without rules. Hélio then taught everything to his sons who brought the sport to the level it is today.
Rickson Gracie is considered Hélio's most successful son in BJJ. Since the age of 18, he has not lost a match. Therefore, Rickson's style differs from other styles by emphasizing fighting/defending from the basics. (balance, connection, timing, weight distribution and leverage)
No matter what situation you find yourself in, you must be able to bend the fight to your will. This is true in matches, but certainly also on the street. This is why Rickson's standard is considered the highest standard in BJJ. The perfection of the basic principles are almost impossible to see and can only be experienced or felt. Rickson is therefore known for his "Invisible Jiu-Jitsu" concepts. The almost never to be perfected endless techniques within BJJ makes it possible to practice it for a lifetime.
Especially in the beginning, a bit of perseverance is required but for those who persevere and persevere will find that his/her patience is rewarded with a new passion or even a Jiu-Jitsu Lifestyle!
