FAQ

To begin BJJ for children, you need the following:

  • A white Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Gi and a white BJJ belt. You can purchase these in our shop in the gym, but of course you are free to purchase them elsewhere.
  • For children 6 and older, we also recommend a bit.
  • A water bottle filled with water.
  • Slippers.

From the age group of 6 years and above, it is unfortunately not possible for parents to watch along the mat during classes. Our experience shows that children behave differently in the presence of their parents, which prevents us from offering the quality of classes we strive for. While your child is taking classes on mat 2, you are welcome to wait in our lounge.

However, we organize regular viewing days, where parents are cordially invited to take a seat in the stands and admire their child's progress.

The only exception to this is the first (trial) lesson. In that case, parents are allowed to come to the mat and attend class.

In our experience, children as young as 6 are often able to join the group effortlessly, because at this age they are already used to school life and working in groups with peers and teachers. During their first lesson, they are assigned a young mentor, a fellow student who helps them go through the exercises and puts them at ease.

However, sometimes a child may still find it too exciting and not dare to participate. In such cases, we work closely with the parents to gradually get the child used to the group and the sport. With patience and small steps, they always manage to integrate and enjoy the lessons in the end.

No, during the school vacations, the youth classes not through. Subscription prices have already been calculated with vacation periods in mind, so subscriptions will continue during the short school vacations. During summer vacation, however, subscriptions will be paused for 6 weeks.

Each new student begins with a white belt and will earn promotions as they progress based on their effort, technical progress and regular attendance. Promotion to a higher band depends on the child's individual progress. Each student develops at his or her own pace, and the time it takes to advance from white belt to gray-white belt, or from gray-white belt to gray belt, may vary from child to child. We focus on a good balance of technical skills, commitment and perseverance. Parents can always contact the instructors for more information about the promotion system and their child's progress.

Yes indeed we participate in several children's competitions each year. We encourage all students to participate in competitions, provided the instructors feel they are ready. Competitions offer valuable lessons, but it is important that the student fully understands what is expected of them before participating. A good strategy is to check with the instructors about when the next local competition will take place and bring your child along to cheer on their teammates. This gives your child a chance to sample the atmosphere and determine if they are interested in participating in the next competition.

Adolescents aged 16, with parental permission, may participate in our adult program.

Our subscriptions are cancelable monthly with 1 month's notice. Please note that the registration fee of €29.95 is only free with your first subscription.

Human Chess

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for children requires not only physical effort, but also a good deal of thinking. When learning Jiu Jitsu techniques, logical thinking is very important. BJJ is often compared to chess and you often hear people say it is "human chess. It works like this: I make a move, and then it's your turn. We keep going until one of us "checkmates" the other, and there is no way out. Then the other taps out, and we start over. It becomes more of a game than a battle.

Discipline

Martial arts have always had a strong link to discipline and structure. Although BJJ is less strict than some traditional Japanese martial arts, it still places great emphasis on order. Through this "Gentle Art," children learn important values such as punctuality, responsibility, caring for others and respect. They learn when to listen, ask questions, and when is the right time to speak. These are essential skills for any growing child.

Friendship

Enjoying frolicking with peers is a great way to make friends. During class, you will practice techniques in pairs or threesomes. You need your "buddy" to master the techniques. You help each other by telling each other what is going well and what could be improved. Then you will "brawl" or spar in a safe, controlled environment, trying out the techniques you have learned. It is important that you tap out when you can't go any further, but even more important is to immediately let go as soon as someone taps out and check to see if everything is okay with your buddy. Then you give each other a buck and start again.

Resilience

The ability to defend yourself is just one of the many benefits of BJJ. Children not only learn to stand up for themselves, but also build the necessary self-confidence. They develop the traits of a real martial artist and learn how to deal with conflicts without using violence. This allows them to act defensively and confidently against bullies in the schoolyard.

Offline mode

No screens for a while. It's incredibly difficult these days to keep kids busy without screens. But during BJJ, they get a chance to spend an hour doing something different: spending time with peers and being physically active at the same time.

Fitness

Getting and staying fit is essential for children. Whereas 20 to 30 years ago you could barely get kids inside when the street lights came on, today it is almost impossible to get them off the couch. Although BJJ is practiced indoors, it ensures that children get an intense workout and are actively moving.
