A good martial arts program teaches children important skills such as discipline, resilience, respect for themselves and others. But what makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) different lies deeper than the principles of martial arts. BJJ is a martial art where the brain has to work just as hard as the body, it is a complex game where logical reasoning is extremely important.
At Elevation Jiu Jitsu we teach children from the age of 6 in a playful way the basics of BJJ, BJJ ensures that a child starts to think differently their body mechanics. The child will discover his/her strength, improve coordination and stability, while constantly solving complex physical puzzles.

What to expect
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for children requires a great mental effort. Logical reasoning is very important when learning Jiu Jitsu techniques. BJJ is often compared to chess, you often hear the term “human chess” when talking about BJJ.
I make a move and then "you" again. We continue until we have checkmate the other and he / she has nowhere to go and so has to "tap".
Okay you got me, I tap and we start over again. Instead of a fight, it becomes a game.
Martial arts have always been related to discipline and structure. While not as military as some Japanese martial arts, BJJ puts an emphasis on order. Through this “Gentle Art” children learn punctuality, responsibility, care for others and respect. Knowing when to listen, ask questions and when to speak are skills that are super important to any growing child.
Playing around with peers is the way to make friends. You practice the techniques in pairs, you need your "buddy" to learn the technique well, you help each other by telling each other what is going well and what could be improved. Then you will play / spar in a controlled environment and try out the techniques. It is important that when you're stuck you tap, but even more important that if someone taps you immediately let go and see if your buddy is doing well. Then you high five and start over.
Beat the bully
The ability to defend yourself is just one of the many benefits of BJJ. Children will not only learn to stand up for themselves, they will also build the necessary confidence in themselves. They will act like a true martial artist, know how to deal with potential conflict situations without resorting to violence. Resilient and confident acting against bullies in the schoolyard.
No screens for a while. Today it is incredibly difficult to entertain children without screens. Something different for an hour, spending time with peers and being active at the same time.
Getting and staying fit, it is extremely important for children to exercise. Whereas 20/30 years ago children had difficulty entering when the street lights went on, todays children having a hard time getting out of the house. BJJ is practiced indoors, but it ensures that the children get a very intensive workout.
The first time I was here I was shocked by how little I could do against the people that train here, while they were not even breaking a sweat. I knew I had to learn how to do that, and I have been training for half a year since then. I am very happy with the progress I could make here. This is a place to learn this sport as effectively as possible. No silly rules about not drinking water during training for example. Everybody is just here to learn. The owner is a cool guy and he wants to make sure you feel welcome. If you have not tried this before and want to check out if it is something for you, this is a great place to go to
" Very awesome gym. They provide instructions in English as well. Very open to non-Dutch people, and definitely safe for beginners and women as well. There is zero politics here and the atmosphere feels like family. It is definitely a very good return of my investment here, as over one year I have become much better athletically, stronger, faster and more confident in myself. I cannot recommend a better gym to start your martial arts journey "
As a complete beginner i felt immediately at home here. The higher belts are always willing to help if you have questions, and everyone is very respectful. Also, if you want to train every day, you can. They offer a wide variety of lessons all the time. I am really glad i started training BJJ, and even more so that i started my journey at Elevation.
" I trained there for almost a year now, and I highly recommend Elevation Sports. There are many classes held by different instructors allowing the study of Jiu-Jitsu under its many aspects: gi, no gi, fundamentals, advanced techniques, leg logs, take downs and all you need to learn. The scheduled is flexible, offering classes and open mats all week. The group is large and varied, but the psychology across all the people is healthy, making Elevation Sports a very happy environment while still being competitive and challenging. There is also always someone up for competitions. The facility is large and can host easily big groups. The mats are extremely clean and taken care on daily basis (by experience, not such a given). Showers and changing rooms are comfortable and extremely clean too. "
" Ondertussen train ik bijna een jaar bij Elevation Sports. Vanaf het begin heb ik mij direct erg welkom gevoeld en de mensen zijn erg vriendelijk. Er wordt hard getraind maar ook zeker veel gelachen. De trainers zijn capabel, geduldig en behulpzaam als je vragen hebt. Al met al ben ik erg blij dat ik de stap heb gezet om eens een proefles te proberen want één les smaakt naar meer! "
Outstanding gym and great people, definitely the best place for Jiu-Jitsu in Utrecht. I have been training here for two years and the guys have constantly been improving the gym and expanding the repertoire of the classes. Also very beginner friendly.
I've been training here for quite some time and I really enjoy every bit of it. Clean, high level, professionalism and a good respectfull group of training partners.
I’ve been training here for over two years. It’s a great gym with an uplifting vibe, providing classes and or open mat hours on a daily basis. Head instructor Simeon offers structured lessons and gives attention to everybody on the mat. The gi classes on Monday and Wednesday are continued with no gi classes, addressing the fundamentals of bjj as a whole. A full class on takedowns is devoted on Saturday’s by instructor Hakar. Looking forward to seeing you on the mat!
Amazing place for jiujitsu. Great atmosphere. Lots of high belts and very beginner friendly. There is even a 6 week beginner course.
" Great gym with a fantastic culture. Amazing environment to train BJJ and learn so much more along the way! "
